In this collection he has kept to minimal instrumentation so the whole album has an overall intimate atmosphere.
The vocal is rich, mellow and understated and given room from the space it has in the mix, so it almost floats over the blend of classical/jazz/folk melodies.
Lyrics are rich in description and many sound almost like you are being gently told a story beside the fire by candle light (In 1963/ Deo Gratias)!
John continues to push his musical muscle and the CD is full of twists and turns in its musiciality, with some very lovely choices of chord sequences (Snowman’s Lament).
Production is excellent, recorded at Mooncalf Studios, which is nestled in the shoulder of Draycot UK surrounded by inspiring countryside. Working with the very skilled hands of engineer Nick Beere, the sounds is crystal clear and mixed with care.
John has been able to find a way of pleasing both the emotional and intelligent requirements of the listener, writing music that seems familiar and friendly, but hiding the clever and complex ideas that lay underneath.’
